Mise-en-scene

Setting: The setting of this scene is in the hat shop where Sophie works every day, making hats. The first thing that catches your eye are all the hats, as they are vibrant in colour, and are positioned all around Sophie, who, on the other hand looks plain, basic and almost pale and gloomy. You also notice the distinct contrast between her, and the bright and colourful background of the hat shop.

Lighting: In this scene the lighting is coming from the window opposite to Sophie, and it is making the colours of the hats and decorations look bright and bold. The cupboards at the back of the room are dim and shadowy, whereas everything else has light reflecting off it. But the darkness of the cupboards also acts as a background which brings out the colour of the hats, and all other objects in the room, making them stand out.

Mood: The mood developed within the scene seems lively and cheery, except for Sophie who seems like she is in a dull and depressed mood even with all the bright and positive energy around her.

Costume: The costume that Sophie is wearing visibly distinguishes her personality and character. By observing the style and colour of her dress, you can immediately tell that Sophie is a plain and boring person by nature, without a sophisticated or creative persona.

Acting style: In this scene, Sophie’s facial expression seems rather plain and emotion-less and it gives the viewer the indication that she doesn’t really want to do what she is currently doing. It seems as if Sophie is persisting or forcing herself to make hats because she feels that it is her responsibility and duty to do so. Though it looks like Sophie is doing her job diligently, you can read the lack of interest she has through her facial expression and the way she is handling the hat.

Props: I believe that the props used in this scene are used effectively as they help to tell the personality of the character through the contrast of colours and styles.
